Hiking trail above the volcanic crater lakes of São Miguel island, Azores, Portugal

Volcano Tours on São Miguel, Azores

Three volcanic systems within an hour of one city, 35 experiences, and an island that last erupted in 1630.

São Miguel is 760 square kilometres of island carrying two thirds of the Azorean tourism market, and it does that on geography rather than on marketing. Three separate volcanic systems sit within ninety minutes of a single city. You can sleep in the same bed for a week, drive west one day and east the next, and see a caldera with two lakes on its floor, a second lake inside a second caldera, and a valley where the ground steams and lunch is buried in it. Nothing else in the archipelago is arranged this conveniently, which is why 35 of the 51 Portuguese listings on this site are here.

This page is about the island as a base: how far things really are, whether to hire a car, what the full-day tours contain, and what São Miguel sells that has nothing to do with craters. The two areas that take most of the bookings have pages of their own, because the operational detail is different in each. Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo are a driving and viewpoint day. Furnas is a lunch, a bath and a fumarole field with an unusual timetable. If you already know which one you want, go there. If you are working out how many days the island needs, stay here.

Three volcanic areas, one base

São Miguel has six volcanic systems in the published record, but only three of them are places you go. Sete Cidades holds the western end, a caldera six kilometres by five with two lakes on its floor. Água de Pau sits in the middle and holds Lagoa do Fogo, a lake at 575 metres with no road to its shore and not one building on it. Furnas is the eastern one, and it is the only one of the three that has erupted since people arrived here: 1630, around two hundred dead.

The rest of the island is connective tissue, and it is not as quiet as it looks. The low ground between Sete Cidades and Fogo, which is the part with the towns and the airport on it, has produced nineteen eruptions in the last three thousand years.

Hire a car, or take the tour

The roads on São Miguel are good, well signposted and short. A hire car is the obvious answer and for most of the island it is the right one. There are two arguments against it and both are worth hearing before you book.

The first is cloud. The three viewpoints that matter, Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno above Sete Cidades and the Serra da Barrosa pull-off above Lagoa do Fogo, sit between 650 and 950 metres, and on an ordinary Azorean day they spend part of it inside the cloud. A guide with a phone and a colleague on the other side of the island knows which rim is clear at ten in the morning. In a hire car you find out by driving there.

The second is that the guided day is not expensive. The small-group west tour with lunch is 85 EUR, the east one is 85, and both run eight hours in a van capped at eight guests. A hire car for the day plus fuel plus lunch is not far below that, and it does not come with somebody who knows the road down to Mosteiros.

Where the car wins outright: Furnas in the evening, the north coast at your own pace, and any morning when you want to be at a viewpoint before the coach parties. That last one is the difference between a photograph of Sete Cidades and a queue for the railing.

What the island costs

Eleven island-wide products sit on this page and between them they cover a wider range than anything else in the Azores, because they include both the cheapest thing in the archipelago and the most expensive.

At the bottom, 28 EUR buys a day on the hop-on hop-off bus, which runs two lines, one towards Sete Cidades and one east towards the Gorreana tea plantation. It is the only product here that works with no car and no guide. At the top, 389 EUR is nine hours of a private four-seat car with a guide who builds the route around you. Between those two, 80 to 132 EUR covers almost everything people actually book.

The half of São Miguel that is not a crater

The volcanic sites are why people come and they are not what fills a week. Four things on this island sell well and get written about badly.

The sea caves on the north coast leave from Rabo de Peixe, a working fishing harbour rather than a marina, and the two-hour trip at 49 EUR reaches a stretch of cliff with no road and no path to it. It is the cheapest way to see what the island looks like from the outside.

Coasteering at Caloura on the south coast is swimming, scrambling and jumping off basalt, 70 EUR, and it is the product that most reliably surprises people who booked it as a filler.

Canyoning in the interior, 65 EUR, goes into ravines cut through volcanic rock that have no other way in.

And the tea. Chá Gorreana on the north coast is the stop every eastern tour makes, and the operators here describe it as the oldest tea plantation in Europe. It costs nothing to walk in, the factory floor is open while the machines are running, and it is a quarter of an hour off the road to Furnas.

When to go, and why there is no season table here

São Miguel does not have a season the way a ski resort or a monsoon country has one. Every road on this island is open in January. The airport runs all year, the hotels run all year, and the fumaroles do not care what month it is.

What changes is the cloud base, and that is a matter of degree rather than of open and shut. From June to September the cloud tends to sit above the crater rims and the lake viewpoints work most days. From November to March it tends to sit below them, and you get the grey wall instead. April, May and October are the gamble, and they are also when the island is cheap and empty.

The season table on the Portugal page sets São Miguel against Pico and Terceira, which is the comparison that helps. Repeating it here for a single island with no closed season would add nothing.

Nineteen eruptions in three thousand years, in the low ground between Sete Cidades and the Fogo caldera. That is the part of São Miguel with the towns and the airport on it.

The things that are not in the listing

Four São Miguel specifics that change a day, none of which show up in the price you are comparing.

Park and viewpoint fees are usually separate. One full-day operator lists parking fees as an inclusion, which tells you what the others are leaving out. Caldeira Velha, the warm stream and pool on the north flank of Água de Pau, is ticketed on its own gate whatever tour brought you there.

Several products here are written for cruise passengers, and they say so: pickup at the pier rather than the hotel, and a return time set by the ship. Ponta Delgada is a call on most Atlantic repositioning itineraries, which is why these exist. If you are not on the ship they are shorter days than they look.

The two-day Grand Circle is two days. At 132 EUR it reads like the value option against an 85 EUR full day, and it is, but it is not a way to compress the island into less time. It is a way to see it properly in more.

Minimum party sizes are real. One of the better west full days states a minimum of two people per booking. Solo travellers get moved to another departure or refunded, which is fine unless you find out on the morning.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do you need on São Miguel?

Three as a minimum: one west for Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, one east for Furnas, and one spare because the cloud will take a viewpoint off you at some point. Four or five is comfortable and lets you add the coast, the sea caves and the north-eastern end of the island, which almost nobody reaches. Two days is enough only if you accept that you are buying the highlights and nothing else.

Do I need a hire car on São Miguel?

No, but it helps. The guided full days at 80 to 98 EUR include lunch, a driver and somebody who knows which crater rim is clear that morning, and the hop-on hop-off bus at 28 EUR covers the two main routes without one. A car earns its cost if you want early mornings at the viewpoints, evenings in Furnas, or the parts of the coast that no tour includes.

How far is Sete Cidades from Ponta Delgada?

About forty minutes by road, and the same again to Lagoa do Fogo from the other direction, which is why the two are sold together as a single west day. Furnas is roughly an hour east along the south coast. Nothing on this island is more than about ninety minutes from the city, and that is the reason São Miguel carries two thirds of the Azorean market.

What is the cheapest way to see the island?

The hop-on hop-off bus at 28 EUR, which runs a Sete Cidades line and a Gorreana line and lets you get off at both. After that, the 46 to 48 EUR half-day jeep and buggy trips to Sete Cidades. Below 50 EUR you are buying transport and a viewpoint; from 80 EUR you are buying a guided day with lunch, and the jump in what you actually see is larger than the jump in price.

Is São Miguel worth it if the forecast is bad?

Partly. Furnas works in rain, because fumaroles, thermal pools and a cooked lunch are not view-dependent, and the coast and the caves work in most weather. The two lake viewpoints are the things that fail: at 650 to 950 metres they go into cloud, and there is no version of that day that gets you the photograph. Plan Furnas for the worst-looking day of your trip and keep the west for the best one.

West tour or east tour, if I can only do one?

West, for the view. Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo on one day is the pair of images that brought you here, and at 80 to 90 EUR with lunch it is the best value day on the island. East, for the experience. Furnas gives you a lunch cooked underground, water at 39 °C and a fumarole field you can walk through, and it does not depend on the sky. People who go once usually pick west. People who go twice usually say the east day was better.

Is anything on São Miguel erupting?

No. The last eruption on the island was in the Furnas caldera in 1630, which killed around two hundred people, and Água de Pau produced the one before that in 1563. What is still running is the geothermal system beneath all of it: springs, fumaroles, mud pools and ground hot enough to cook in. The volcanoes are monitored continuously and the surface activity you can visit is the steady kind, not the eruptive kind.
