Packing lists for hiking are all the same and mostly fine. Volcanoes need a few specific adjustments, because the ground is unlike anything else you walk on, the temperature swing is larger than the map suggests, and a surprising number of these trips happen in the dark.
So rather than a generic list, here is what goes wrong, and what prevents it.
Problem one: the ground eats footwear
Volcanic terrain comes in two unpleasant varieties and they fail your shoes differently.
Scoria and volcanic sand is loose, sharp-edged grit that behaves like sand on a slope. It gets into everything, and it grinds. It also gives way underfoot, so each step takes back part of itself. On Bromo, Batur, Acatenango and Rinjani this is most of what you will be walking on.
A'a lava is a field of angular blocks with edges like broken glass, because that is chemically what it is. It cuts shoes, and it cuts hands when you fall on it.
What works: a proper hiking shoe or boot with a stiff sole and a rand, the rubber strip around the toe. Ankle support helps on the descents more than the ascents. Trail runners are fine on established paths and get shredded on a'a.
What fails: trainers, canvas shoes, and anything with a mesh upper, which lets grit straight through. Sandals of any kind on scoria are a way to lose skin.
The cheap trick that solves most of it: gaiters. A pair of light ankle gaiters keeps volcanic grit out of your boots, and on descents through deep ash they turn a miserable hour into an easy one. They cost very little and almost nobody brings them.
Problem two: it is colder than you have any reason to expect
Covered in detail on our altitude page, and worth repeating in one line: the top of a tropical volcano before dawn is between five and twenty degrees colder than the place you left, and the wind makes the number worse.
The three-layer system solves it and the middle layer is the one people leave in the hotel.
Base layer: anything except cotton. You will sweat climbing and then stand still in wind, and wet cotton at four degrees is genuinely dangerous, not merely uncomfortable.
Insulation: a fleece or light down jacket. This is the item that feels absurd when packing for Bali and is the difference between enjoying a sunrise and enduring one.
Shell: a windproof and preferably waterproof layer. Wind matters more than air temperature: still air at two degrees is pleasant in a fleece and the same temperature with a stiff breeze is not.
Plus gloves and something over your ears, which weigh nothing and are the two things people most regret leaving.
Carry the layers rather than wearing them on the way up. Arriving at the top soaked in your own sweat is the most reliable way to get cold.
Problem three
A lot of this happens in the dark
Sunrise treks leave between two and four in the morning. Stromboli descends by torchlight. Ijen's whole point is visible only before dawn. If your tour involves a sunrise, you are walking in darkness on loose ground for hours.
Bring your own head torch. Not a hand torch, because you want your hands, and not your phone, because it will be dead by the time you need it and you will be using it for photographs. Any modern head torch is bright enough; what matters is that it is on your head and it is yours.
Some tours provide them. The most specific recurring complaint we found about volcano tours involves equipment that did not work, and torches feature prominently. Bring your own regardless of what is promised, and put a spare set of batteries in your pocket rather than your bag, because cold flattens batteries and your pocket is warm.
The other thing about darkness: it makes the ground harder to read on descent. If you use walking poles at all, this is the trip for them.
Problem four: there is nothing up there
Volcanic slopes have no water, no shade and usually no shelter. Everything you will consume, you are carrying.
Water. Two litres for a half-day walk, three for a long hot day, and for the big overnight treks the amount people argue about is three versus four litres, which tells you the honest answer is somewhere in that range and depends on you. Altitude and dry air dehydrate you faster than the temperature suggests. Ask whether the operator resupplies at a camp: on Acatenango and Rinjani, some do.
Sun. Dark volcanic ground reflects heat upwards and offers no shade whatever. Sun cream, a hat, and sunglasses, which do double duty against grit in the wind. At altitude the ultraviolet is stronger than at the same latitude at sea level.
Food. Something salty as well as something sweet. On long days people under-eat because of altitude appetite loss, and then wonder why the descent is so hard.
Cash. Small notes for park fees, tips and the rental of the jumper you should not need because you brought a fleece.
Problem five: gas, ash and grit
This is where volcano packing genuinely differs from mountain packing.
A buff or scarf is the single most useful small item. It keeps ash and dust out of your mouth on a windy crater rim, covers your ears, and doubles as a hat. Almost weightless.
Eye protection. Fine ash in the eyes is unpleasant and painful, and it is significantly worse for contact lens wearers, who should carry glasses as a backup on ashy days. Wraparound sunglasses do more here than fashionable ones.
What not to buy: a gas mask. This is the one piece of advice on this page that contradicts what you will read elsewhere. The international guidance on volcanic health hazards does not recommend gas masks for the general public, because a cartridge respirator only protects you if the cartridge matches the gas, the mask has been fit-tested to your face, and you know how to use it. Without all three you are wearing confidence rather than protection. A dust mask, N95 included, filters ash and no gas whatsoever. And wetting a cloth does not help, despite an old and widely copied piece of guidance that has since been corrected by the people who wrote it.
At Ijen, where this actually comes up, the honest framing is that the crater floor is a working sulphur mine with measured exposure several times the safety threshold, and no mask you can buy in a hurry changes that. The rim in normal conditions is a different and reasonable proposition. Treat the descent as a decision, not an equipment problem.
Cameras. Fine ash is abrasive and gets everywhere, and in humid volcanic air it is faintly acidic. Change lenses as little as possible, keep the camera in a bag when not in use, and bring a blower rather than wiping the lens, which grinds the grit into the coating.

What not to bring
New boots. A volcano is a terrible place to discover where a boot rubs. Anything you wear should have done at least one long walk already.
A large rucksack. On day trips it fills up with things you do not need and slows you down on loose ground. Twenty to thirty litres is plenty for anything that is not an overnight.
Cotton anything, for the reason above.
A drone, in most cases. Restricted or banned in a large proportion of national parks in this catalogue, and the fine is worse than the footage.
Rocks. Taking volcanic rock is prohibited in many parks and is culturally offensive in Hawai'i, where the park receives a steady flow of returned stones from visitors who took one and subsequently had a bad year. Whatever you make of that, the rule is real.
Quick answers
Can I do a volcano hike in trainers?
On made paths like Vesuvius, yes. On scoria or lava, they will be damaged and you will be uncomfortable, and on a'a they can be cut through. If you own one pair of shoes for the trip, make it something with a stiff sole and a rubber toe rand.
How much water for Acatenango?
The figure people argue about is three to four litres, which is a real range rather than an unresolved question: it depends on your rate of sweating and on whether the operator resupplies at camp. Ask before you go, because carrying four litres up 1,500 metres is a meaningful weight if you did not need to.
Should I buy a gas mask?
No. The guidance from the international body that writes volcanic health advice specifically does not recommend gas masks for the general public: they need the right cartridge, a fit test and training, and without those they mislead you. Dust masks filter ash and no gas at all, and nothing filters carbon dioxide.
For a visitor the protection is distance, height and time: stay upwind, stay out of hollows, and keep it short. A buff for dust is useful in far more places than a respirator would be.
Are walking poles worth carrying?
On descents through deep scoria, yes, more than on the way up. They are also genuinely useful in the dark, where you cannot read the ground. If you have knee trouble, they matter more than any other item on this page.
What is the one thing people most often forget?
Gloves. They weigh nothing, they take up no space, and at four in the morning on a windy crater rim they are the difference between watching a sunrise and standing with your hands in your armpits waiting for it to end.
