Here is the structural problem with this entire category. The phrase volcano tour covers a paved two-hour stroll at Vesuvius and a roped ascent of a glaciated 5,897-metre peak in Ecuador. Both are marketed with the same words, both appear in the same search results, and the listing rarely makes the difference obvious.
When we scored around forty of the world's best-known volcano itineraries on a single scale, the range came out at ninety points out of a hundred. That is not a category. That is a spectrum with a family walk at one end and mountaineering at the other, and the single most common planning mistake is booking from the wrong end of it.
So this section is built around the five decisions, roughly in the order they should be made.
One: what kind of volcanic experience do you actually want?
People say they want to see a volcano. They usually mean one of five quite different things, and the destinations that serve them barely overlap.

The reason this comes first is that four of those five are reliable and one is not. If what you want is row one, you should build the trip so that failing to get it still leaves you with a good holiday. If what you want is any of the other four, you can plan with confidence, because craters and lava fields and geysers are where they were last year.
Two: the honest fitness question
The difficulty is in the ground, not the mountain
Volcanoes are unusual to walk on and it catches out fit people. Three surfaces do most of the damage.
Volcanic sand and scoria takes back a third of every step. Bromo's sand sea is fifteen minutes of walking that exhausts people before the climb even starts. Acatenango is loose ash for hours. It is not steep, it is just relentless, and no amount of gym work prepares you for it.
A'a lava is a field of broken glass with ankles in mind. It destroys trainers and cuts hands, and it is slow in a way that wrecks timings.
Altitude with no warning. This is the one that hurts. You can drive to 3,055 metres on Maui and to 4,207 on Mauna Kea, from sea level, in about two hours. Your body gets no signal that it is climbing, and the mountain does not care that you did not walk up.
Three: when, and it is rarely the month you would guess
Volcanic destinations sit in every climate zone on earth, so there is no season. There are about six different calendars, and they contradict each other.
The Mediterranean ones invert with altitude. In Sicily, July at sea level is 35 °C and the summit is perfect. In January the coast is pleasant and the summit is a ski resort. Etna has two seasons at once, on the same mountain, on the same day.
The tropical ones run on rain, not temperature. Java, Bali and Lombok have a dry season from roughly June to September, and outside it the sunrise you got up at two in the morning for is behind cloud. The temperature barely moves all year. The rain moves by a factor of twenty.
The southern hemisphere is not just upside down. In New Zealand the coldest month is also the wettest, which is not true in the Mediterranean, and the busiest tourist season is Christmas.
Iceland runs on light and wind. Reykjavík gets about twelve hours of sunshine in the whole of December, and 183 in July. The rainfall barely changes. The season is made of daylight.
The Canaries are the exception that runs all year, and their high season is winter, unlike everywhere else in this list.
Four: what the trip demands of you before you get there
A surprising number of volcanic destinations cannot simply be turned up at, and the requirements are not always where you would look for them.
Some require a permit bought weeks ahead. Haleakalā's sunrise reservation opens sixty days out. Mount St. Helens climbing permits are released monthly and sell out in minutes for summer weekends. The last 172 metres of Teide need a permit with a fixed time slot and a cap of fifty people on the path at once.
Some require a guide by law, and the rule is often not where you would expect. On Etna, the obligation is tied to a zone drawn by the volcano observatory and to the civil protection alert of the day, not to an altitude, despite what almost every operator writes. On Stromboli it is set by a mayoral ordinance. On Batur it is enforced by a local guides' association rather than any government.
Some require transport you have to arrange separately. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-way traverse: there is no parking at the start in summer, and at the end of the day you are 25 kilometres from your car unless you booked a shuttle.
And some have medical restrictions published in plain sight that nobody reads. The agency managing Mauna Kea advises against going above the visitor centre if you are under 13, pregnant, have heart or respiratory conditions, or have been scuba diving in the previous 24 hours. That last one describes an ordinary Hawaii holiday.
Five: which tour, once you know all of the above
Only now is it worth comparing products, and the things that separate a good day from a bad one are mostly not in the headline.
The two that matter most, in our reading of what goes wrong: how much of the stated duration is spent moving, and what time it actually starts. A twelve-hour tour with eight hours of minibus is a common and legitimate product, and it is a terrible surprise. A three o'clock start is normal for a sunrise trek and worth knowing in advance.
After that: group size, whether pick-up is included and from where, what language the guide works in, what equipment is provided rather than assumed, and the cancellation terms, because weather cancels a lot of these.
The one rule that covers everything else
Volcanoes are managed landscapes. Almost everywhere you might want to go, someone official has drawn a line, set an alert level, or written an ordinance, and those things change on timescales of days.
So the rule is: plan against the structure, check the state. The structure is the climate, the terrain, the permit system, the seasonal opening of a park. It is stable, it is what these pages are about, and you can build a trip on it. The state is whether the volcano is erupting, whether the trail is open today, and what the alert level says this morning. That belongs to the observatory, and it is one click away.
Anyone who tells you the state of a volcano on a page written months ago is telling you what was true when they wrote it.

I have never hiked. Can I do a volcano?
Comfortably. Vesuvius is a 175 metre climb on a made path. The Kilauea Iki trail in Hawai'i walks across a solidified lava lake. Lanzarote's volcanic landscape is largely seen from a coach and short walkways. What you should avoid is anything sold as a sunrise trek, which almost always means a night start on loose ground.
How far ahead should I book?
For anything with a government permit cap, as early as the system allows: sixty days for Haleakalā, and the monthly release for Mount St. Helens. For guided treks in peak season, several weeks. For everything else, a week is usually fine, and booking early in your trip rather than late is the better habit, because it leaves you spare days if weather cancels.
Is one volcano enough, or should I plan several?
One done properly beats three rushed, with one exception: if the thing you want is lava, spreading your chances across several nights at the same volcano is worth more than visiting several volcanoes once each.
Do I need travel insurance for this?
Check the exclusions rather than assuming. Many policies limit or exclude trekking above a stated altitude, and some name volcanic activity specifically. Several of the destinations here are above 3,000 metres, and a few are above 4,000.
