Cruise Stopover on São Miguel: Sete Cidades, Gorreana Tea, Furnas
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Sao MiguelFive and a half hours is what a ship's stopover allows, and this tour is built to fit inside it. Pick-up is in the cruise terminal hall at Ponta Delgada, from someone holding a sign with your name on it. First the Sete Cidades volcano and the Vista do Rei, the viewpoint over the crater that holds the Blue and Green lakes, and the most famous viewpoint in Portugal. Then the north coast at the Miradouro de Santa Iria, where the cliffs drop to the ocean with green hills and wildflowers behind them. Gorreana comes next. The plantation grows green tea and black tea, and the guides go through the history of the place, how the leaf is grown, and the old methods still used to process it. Both teas are poured fresh at the end. Furnas is the last stop, and you smell it before you see it. Steam comes straight up out of the ground beside the road, hot springs bubble in the middle of the village, and sulphur hangs in the air the whole time you are there. If the ship's clock leaves room, one more stop is added: a pineapple plantation, grown by a method used nowhere else.

Molhe do Porto, Ponta Delgada
The meeting point is the cruise terminal hall at Ponta Delgada. Your driver is inside, holding a sign with your name on it. Do not use Google Maps or any similar app: the pin does not recognise the inside of the cruise terminal. Do not walk out of the terminal hall.
Vista do Rei Miradouro
Pick-up at the cruise terminal lounge, then out of Ponta Delgada to the Sete Cidades volcano and the Green and Blue lagoons. Both sit inside one huge crater, and the viewpoint takes in the whole of it, one of the widest views in the country.
Miradouro de Santa Iria
The north coast, from the Santa Iria viewpoint. Cliffs going straight down to the water, green hills and wildflowers behind, the ocean a much darker blue below. Plenty to point a camera at.
Plantacoes de Cha Gorreana
Gorreana grows green tea and black tea on hillsides you can walk out into. The guides go through the plantation's history, how the tea is grown, and the traditional methods still used to process it. Both are poured fresh at the end, and they taste nothing alike.
Furnas
Furnas, where the geothermal springs and the gardens are. You notice it on the way in: steam rising out of the ground, hot springs bubbling at the roadside, sulphur in the air.
