East São Miguel by Electric Van, Eight Seats, Furnas Lunch
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Sao MiguelThe van is fully electric and the group is capped at eight, which changes the day in two ways. It is quiet, and there is time at each stop rather than a schedule to keep to. The route works the east of the island. Furnas is the centre of it, the geothermal region where the ground steams and the water comes up hot, and lunch is the traditional Furnas meal, included in the price. At Furnas there is a choice to make. Either the geothermal fields, with the fumaroles, the mud pools and the carbonated mineral waters to taste, or the Terra Nostra park and its iron-rich thermal pool, where the entrance is not included and is paid on site. The rest of the route: the chapel above Vila Franca do Campo with the volcanic islet offshore, the Pico do Ferro over the Furnas caldera, the Salto do Cavalo viewpoint, the waterfalls at Ribeira dos Caldeirões, an old whale lookout in the Nordeste, and the Santa Iria viewpoint over the north coast to finish.
What's included

Nossa Senhora da Paz
The tour starts at Nossa Senhora da Paz, the hilltop chapel above Vila Franca do Campo, with the town, the Atlantic and the Ilhéu de Vila Franca, the volcanic islet offshore, all below.
Caldeira das Furnas
The geothermal fields at Furnas, where the volcanism is visible: fumaroles steaming, mud pools bubbling, hot springs coming out of the ground. The mineral waters here are naturally carbonated and can be tasted.
Parque Terra Nostra
The alternative to the geothermal fields: Terra Nostra Park, and a bathe in its iron-rich thermal pool. Anyone choosing this has time in the hot water and in the grounds. The entrance fee is not included.
Costo extra
Miradouro Pico Do Ferro
The Pico do Ferro, one of the best viewpoints over the Furnas caldera, with the lake, the village and the volcanic ground around them all in view.
Miradouro do Salto do Cavalo
Salto do Cavalo, a mountain viewpoint over the eastern end of São Miguel. On a clear day both coasts are visible from here, north and south.
Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes
The Ribeira dos Caldeirões natural park, with its waterfalls, thick vegetation and walking paths that are kept in good order.
