Nossa Senhora da Paz

The tour starts at Nossa Senhora da Paz, the hilltop chapel above Vila Franca do Campo, with the town, the Atlantic and the Ilhéu de Vila Franca, the volcanic islet offshore, all below.

Caldeira das Furnas

The geothermal fields at Furnas, where the volcanism is visible: fumaroles steaming, mud pools bubbling, hot springs coming out of the ground. The mineral waters here are naturally carbonated and can be tasted.

Parque Terra Nostra

An optional stop, taken instead of the geothermal fields: Terra Nostra Park, and a bathe in its iron-rich thermal pool. Anyone choosing this has time in the hot water and in the grounds. The entrance fee is not included.

Furnas

Lunch is cozido, the Furnas stew left to cook slowly in the volcanic heat. Main course, drink, dessert and coffee are all included. Alternatives are available on request for anyone who does not eat certain meats.

Miradouro Pico Do Ferro

The Pico do Ferro, one of the best viewpoints over the Furnas caldera, with the lake, the village and the volcanic ground around them all in view.

Miradouro do Salto do Cavalo

Salto do Cavalo, a mountain viewpoint over the eastern end of São Miguel. On a clear day both coasts are visible from here, north and south.

Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

The Ribeira dos Caldeirões natural park, with its waterfalls, thick vegetation and walking paths that are kept in good order.

Nordeste

Through the Nordeste, with a stop at an old whale lookout. From there the coast is rough, the pastures are green, and the villages are small.
