Driving Your Own Buggy Around the Sete Cidades Caldera: 5 km Across, 400 m Deep
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Sao MiguelYou drive the buggy yourself, on road and off it, around a caldera five kilometres across and 400 metres deep. Sete Cidades holds four lagoons: Santiago, Rasa, Azul and Verde, connected to each other and photographed more than anything else in the Azores. They are one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal in the non-marine water category. The legend says the colours come from a princess with blue eyes and a shepherd with green ones. The actual reason is geometry: Lagoa Verde sits in a tighter bowl and takes its colour from the vegetation around it, while Lagoa Azul is wide enough to reflect the sky. The route stops at 845 metres, the highest point of the volcano, with all four lagoons in view, and at the Cumeeiras viewpoint, which looks at the crater from the opposite side to Vista do Rei and, turning round, over the north coast and its pastures. On the way there, the Wall of the Nine Windows, an aqueduct built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to carry water from the Canário lake to Ponta Delgada, which had none. It was restored by the municipality after years of decay. The day starts with a briefing on driving and safety. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Close to the Devassa Mountain is the Wall of the Nine…
Near Devassa Mountain stands the Wall of the Nine Windows, an aqueduct built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Santo António had water and Ponta Delgada did not, so the water captured around the Canário lake was carried over these arches, the nine windows the wall is named for. It had been decaying until the municipal services of Ponta Delgada brought it back.
845 meters altitude View to Lagoa de Santiago
845 metres up, with Lagoa de Santiago, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul all in view.
Miradouro Das Cumeeiras
The Cumeeiras viewpoint looks at the Sete Cidades crater from the side opposite Vista do Rei. Turn around and the north coast of São Miguel is there instead, green pasture with cattle on it.
Lagoa Verde / Lagoa das Sete Cidades
The Sete Cidades caldera is about 5 km across and 400 m deep, and the volcano's highest point is 845 m. Its rims, the large and small Cumeeiras, carry a walking trail around the summits of one of the largest calderas in the Azores. Four lagoons lie inside it, Santiago, Rasa, Azul and Verde, connected to one another, and the last two are the image the Azores is sold on and one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal among non-marine waters. The legend of the colours is a blue-eyed princess and a green-eyed shepherd. The physical reason is that Lagoa Verde sits in steeper, closer slopes and takes the reflection of the vegetation, while Lagoa Azul is larger and takes the sky.
