Furnas is the volcanic valley on the east of São Miguel, and the part of the island Azorean tourism was built on. The volcano here has an eruptive history going back more than 100,000 years, and the valley shows it: mineral and thermal waters of every kind, boilers, fumaroles. The cozido is cooked in the ground, and you see how the locals do it. The tea plantation is one of the only ones in Europe. Terra Nostra, the botanical garden with the thermal pool, is an optional stop. Whether it happens depends on the time left and on what the group wants that day, and the entrance is not included. This is a shared shore excursion, not a private one. It is meant to stay small, but on cruise ship days the group can be larger.
