Mount Batur rising from the floor of its caldera, Kintamani, Bali, Indonesia

Mount Batur Jeep Tours: the Caldera in Daylight

Ten 4x4 listings from 18.22 EUR, three of them at sunset. The same lava field as the dawn run, without the 01:30 pickup or the queue at the viewpoint.

Everything on Batur is sold for sunrise, and it has produced an odd result: the mountain is most photographed in the fifteen minutes when you can barely see it. This group is the 4x4 runs that are not built around dawn. Three of the ten are sunset departures, one starts at seven in the morning with a guide from the Batur guides' association, and the rest are jeep circuits of the caldera floor that happen to have been filed here rather than in the dawn group. Between them they carry about 3,200 reviews, roughly half of what a single popular sunrise listing manages, which tells you how thoroughly the market has decided what time of day this mountain is for.

Two things worth saying before the detail. First, the naming in this group is loose: six of the ten still describe a sunrise in their own text, because operators name almost every Batur jeep product that way regardless of when it leaves. Read the departure time rather than the title. Second, the sunset run is the most under-bought thing on this mountain, and the argument for it is in the numbers below.

The case for going at the other end of the day

The dawn product on Batur is excellent and it costs you a night. Pickup between 01:30 and 02:30, two to three hours in a vehicle, an hour sitting still at under 10 °C, and the rest of the day written off. The sunset version is the identical terrain, driven in the afternoon, with the light going the other way and the temperature about fifteen degrees higher. One operator puts it about as bluntly as a listing can: the tour starts at noon, which means you do not have to wake up very early.

The other difference is people. The three sunset listings on this site carry 256 reviews between them, against roughly 6,800 for the twelve dawn jeep listings. That is not a crowd measurement, but it is a fair proxy for how many other vehicles will be parked at the viewpoint with you. Everyone who has done the dawn run mentions the queue of jeeps. Nobody who has done the sunset one does.

The honest counterargument: the caldera faces east. Sunrise happens over the crater and the lake, which is the picture everybody has seen. At sunset the sun goes down behind you and the light lands on the cone instead. It is a good photograph and it is not the famous one.

What you can actually see when it is light

This is the real argument for a daytime jeep, and it has nothing to do with sleep. The interesting ground on Batur is the caldera floor, and at dawn it is a silhouette.

The route on most of these listings runs through the black flow field near Kintamani, across the loose grey sand the operators call the black sand desert, and past the outcrops where cooled lava has piled into rounded masses. One listing names a stop called Lava Ball Point and gets out of the vehicle there. Another describes the area under its formal title as part of the Kintamani Geopark. The lake sits below with the villages on its shore, and Mount Abang closes the far side of the caldera. In daylight you can see the boundary between the 1960s flows and the older ground that farmers have been working for centuries, which is the thing that makes a caldera legible rather than just dark.

About half the listings finish at the natural hot springs on the lake shore. Sitting in warm water looking at a volcano is a better proposition at four in the afternoon than at nine in the morning with three hours of driving still to come.

Three things to check before you pay

The departure time, not the title. Six of these ten listings talk about sunrise somewhere in their text. If the schedule says a pickup between 01:30 and 02:30 you have bought the dawn product, whatever group it is filed under. If it says midday, noon or afternoon, you have bought the sunset one. One says seven in the morning, which is the only genuinely civilised start in the whole Batur catalogue.

Whether the hot springs are in. They are the single biggest swing in this group and the reason the top listing reaches 68.69 EUR. Two listings at 21.16 and 18.22 EUR include them, which makes the more expensive ones worth questioning rather than assuming.

Where you are collected from. Kintamani is two to three hours from Seminyak, Kuta and Sanur, and about ninety minutes from Ubud. On a daytime tour that is four to six hours of driving inside a day you were awake for anyway, which is a very different proposition from doing it at two in the morning. Anyone based in Ubud gets substantially more out of this group than anyone based on the coast.

Six thousand eight hundred reviews for the mountain at dawn, two hundred and fifty-six for the same mountain in the afternoon. The volcano has not moved. The only thing being sold at 01:30 is the photograph everyone has already seen.

Questions people actually ask

Is the sunset jeep worth doing instead of the sunrise one?

If you are not chasing the specific photograph of the sun coming up over the crater, yes. You get the same terrain, the same lava field and the same viewpoint, in mild temperatures, without a 01:30 pickup, and with a fraction of the vehicles around you. The trade-off is the direction of the light: the caldera faces east, so at sunset the sun is behind you and the crater is in shadow rather than lit.

Do these jeeps reach the summit of Mount Batur?

No, and neither do the dawn ones. The 4x4 route runs on the caldera floor and up to a viewpoint on the rim which operators here state at around 1,365 metres. The summit is 1,717 metres and reaching it means walking. The only vehicle-assisted product that gets you there is a hybrid in the sunrise trekking group: a jeep most of the way and then 45 minutes on foot.

What is the black lava field like in daylight?

Grey and black loose ground with cooled flows standing out of it, running right up against farmland that is still worked. In the dark it is a texture under a torch beam. In daylight you can see where the flows stopped and where the soil starts again, which is the whole point of the place. It has its own group on this site if you want it as the main event.

How long does a daytime jeep tour take?

Four to eight hours door to door, and the spread is almost entirely driving. From Ubud, four to five. From Seminyak or Kuta, seven to eight, of which five or six are in the car. The time on the mountain itself is usually two to three hours whatever you paid.

Are the hot springs included?

On about half of these listings. They are on the shore of Lake Batur, inside the caldera, and they are heated by the same system as the volcano. Check the inclusions rather than the price: two of the cheaper listings here include them and one of the more expensive ones is largely paying for a private vehicle instead.

Can I do this with small children or an older relative?

More comfortably than any other Batur product. There is no walking, the start is at a normal hour on the daytime and sunset runs, and the vehicle does everything. The dawn jeep is also mobility-friendly but adds a night drive and an hour sitting still in the cold, which is the part that goes badly with young children.
