Batur Sunset Jeep to the Lava Field, with Pillow and Ropy Lava Named

Batur is a sunrise mountain by reputation, and the traffic on it reflects that. This jeep tour goes the other way: up in the late afternoon, for the golden hour, when the viewpoints have thinned out. There is no trek. The jeep climbs to the sunset viewpoint, and the volcano it climbs is an active one, in Kintamani Regency, one of the most visited parts of Bali. The lava field is what the rest of the tour is built around. It is the largest of the Batur formation on earth, and the guide reads it out loud: which eruption laid down which flow, and how to tell the shapes apart. Pillow lava, in rounded lobes. Ropy lava, cooled into coiled strands. Lava balls, sitting loose on the surface. Once they are named, the black ground stops looking uniform, which is the difference between crossing a lava field and seeing one. The jeep removes the climb, and the hour of departure removes the crowd.
