When Is Mount Bromo Closed? The Calendar Nobody Publishes in English

Mount Bromo shuts completely for Nyepi, Eid, Wulan Kapitu and Yadnya Kasada, and the notices come weeks ahead in Indonesian only. What closed in 2025 and 2026, the fee, the booking, and the March 2027 dates.

Mount Bromo is closed to every visitor several times a year, and the dates are announced in Indonesian, a few weeks ahead, on the park's own news page. On Thursday 19 March 2026 the road up from the Probolinggo side stopped at the village of Wonokerto at 06:00 and stayed shut for 24 hours, for Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence. Visitors were told to wait until midday on 21 March.

That is the kind of closure a booking page does not show you. A Bromo sunrise tour is sold as a product with a price and a departure time. Whether the mountain is open on that date is a separate fact, held by the park authority and by the Tengger people whose ceremonies decide it. Here is what closed in 2025 and 2026, what the rules for the next one look like, and what we could not confirm.

One scope note first. This article covers the scheduled closures, the ones that follow a ritual calendar. A closure because the volcano is restless follows the volcano and has no calendar at all.

Closures at Mount Bromo, 2025 to 2026, per the park's news page and Indonesian press, read 3 November 2026. Times in WIB.

When Mount Bromo is closed: four closures that come back every year

Nyepi and Idul Fitri are the two a visitor is most likely to hit, because they fall close together. In 2025 the park closed all four gates from 28 March to 1 April, five days in one block, to let Hindu Tengger residents observe Nyepi and Muslim residents celebrate Eid. In 2026 the two festivals fell close together and the closure announced for the Probolinggo side ran from 19 March to midday on 21 March. The park's news page also carries an item dated 24 February 2025 saying tourism across the whole park would be "closed totally" for the two festivals, which means the notice came more than a month ahead that year.

Yadnya Kasada is the annual offering at the crater, and it moves. In 2025 the closure ran 10 to 13 June. In 2026 it ran 30 May to 2 June, eleven days earlier, because the date follows the Tengger calendar and not the Gregorian one. During the 2025 closure the press reported that the ritual could be watched from Cemara Lawang, Dingklik and Jemplang, which are on the caldera rim, while tourism inside the caldera was prohibited.

Wulan Kapitu is the one almost nobody outside East Java has heard of. The park's news page carries a headline about a closure "of the Bromo area during Wulan Kapitu", and the 2025-26 notice was issued on 18 November 2025 by the head of the park authority. It was split into two phases, both starting at 15:00 and lasting about a day and a half: 18 to 19 December 2025 and 17 to 18 January 2026. Indonesian press coverage says earlier closures for the ritual lasted 24 hours. As of 3 November 2026 we found no notice for the 2026-27 edition. If the authority repeats last year's timing, it would come in the next few weeks, but that is an inference from one cycle, not a rule.

Why a midnight pick-up makes a closure worse

Read the closure times against how the tours run. The listings in our Bromo category describe pick-ups from Surabaya or Malang at around midnight or 01:00, a drive of two and a half to three hours, a viewpoint at Penanjakan, known as King Kong Hill, with sunrise at around 04:30, and then the caldera floor and the crater stairs.

A typical Bromo morning, as the listed tours describe it

Times are taken from the descriptions of tours in our Bromo category, read on 3 November 2026. They vary by operator and by season.

The origins

  1. 00:00 to 01:00

    Pick-up

From a hotel in Surabaya or Malang. Some operators leave at 23:30 and one starts at 01:00.

  2. Before sunrise

    Off-road transfer

After two and a half to three hours on tarmac, a 4WD takes over for the last stretch.

The growth

  1. About 04:30

    Sunrise at Penanjakan

The viewpoint is where the sunrise is watched, with Bromo in view.

Today

  1. Morning

    Sand sea and crater

The walk across the caldera floor, then the stairs to the rim. One listed tour counts them at 250 steps.

Now set that against the 2025 notice: closure from 28 March at 00:01. A traveller whose tour left at 23:30 on the evening of 27 March would have been on the road when the park shut, and would have arrived three hours later at a gate that was closed. This is our reading of the times, not a case we have seen reported, but the mechanism is plain. The closure starts earlier than the date on the booking suggests, and the pick-up starts earlier than the closure.

The practical rule: for any departure within a day of a closure date, ask the operator for the hour the notice takes effect, not just the date. The Probolinggo official who announced the March 2026 closure gave the same advice as the park in 2025: if you plan to come after a reopening, book online well ahead, because visits usually surge afterwards.

Nyepi 2027 falls on 8 March, and Eid two days later

The date to plan around is Monday 8 March 2027. The Indonesian government's joint decree on 2027 holidays, as summarised by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, lists Nyepi (Saka 1949) as a national holiday on that day. It lists Idul Fitri 1448 H on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March, with collective leave on Tuesday 9 March, Friday 12 March and Monday 15 March. We read the ministry's summary on 3 November 2026 and could not open the decree itself.

Two cautions. The 9th is a collective leave day, not Nyepi, so check any calendar that puts the Day of Silence there against the decree. And the Eid dates are the government's, set ahead of time. The actual start of Shawwal depends on the sighting of the moon and can move by a day.

The park has not announced a closure for March 2027, and nothing here should be read as one. The pattern of the last two years is that Nyepi and Eid close the mountain together or in sequence. In 2027 they are two days apart, so a single block running from 8 March to about 11 March would be consistent with the past two years. That is a forecast, and the notice, when it comes, replaces it.

Bromo entrance fee: foreigners pay the same every day

A claim that circulates on travel pages is that foreigners pay more at weekends. It stopped being true on 30 October 2024. The park's head, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, announced on 24 October 2024 that entrance fees would be adjusted from 30 October, and the park's own news page headlines the item as following Government Regulation No. 36 of 2024. The holiday surcharge in the new schedule applies to domestic visitors. The foreign rate is a single figure.

Entrance fee per person per day, in rupiah (Rp), per the park head's statement of 24 October 2024. Euros are approximate, at about 20,400 Rp to the euro (22 July 2026 rate).
Visitor Weekday Holiday Approximate euros
Foreign visitorRp255,000Rp255,000About 12.50
Indonesian visitorRp54,000Rp79,000About 2.65 on a weekday, 3.90 on a holiday

The ratio is ours, worked out from those two figures: a foreigner pays about 4.7 times the weekday domestic rate (255 divided by 54) and about 3.2 times the holiday one. We found no November exchange rate, so the euro column is an estimate. The statement says the fee includes insurance of Rp5,000 for foreigners and Rp4,000 for Indonesians, and that anyone entering without a valid ticket, or with an illegal one, pays a penalty of five times the normal fee per person per day. We found no revision after October 2024. A fee schedule more than two years old is the sort of fact that changes without a headline, so confirm the amount when you book.

Bromo booking online: what we could confirm

The park's news page carries an item dated 16 October 2024 headlined "Masuk Kawasan Gunung Bromo Wajib Daftar Online", which means entering the area requires online registration, and a "Booking Online" link. We could not open the booking page from our research environment, so we are not printing an address we could not check. Use the link on the park's own site.

Officials gave the same advice in 2025 and 2026: book online and early for the days after a reopening. If you are on a tour, the operator normally handles the ticket, but ask whether the price you paid includes the park fee.

A ritual closure is not an eruption closure

Everything above is about days the mountain is shut by agreement. Bromo's volcanic status is a different matter, and it is not in this article as a current fact. The national volcano agency's MAGMA Indonesia portal did not open for us on 3 November 2026. Press reports from the past weeks describe an alert level II ("Waspada") and an exclusion zone of one kilometre around the active crater, but the same search turned up pages with misleading dates, so we have not printed any level as current. Read it at the source on the day you travel; our guide to checking activity explains how, and where you need a guide, a permit, or both covers the permit side.

Bromo is also half of most East Java itineraries. The combined trips in our catalogue pair it with Ijen and its blue fire, in two or three days, so a Bromo closure removes the first morning and leaves the rest. Ijen has its own authority, and we have not checked its calendar for this piece. For what Ijen's gas is like, see our article on the gas mask they rent you at Ijen, and the listings for Mount Ijen and Bali show the departures that end on that side of the strait.

Questions about Bromo closures

When is Mount Bromo closed?

For Nyepi, Eid al-Fitr, Yadnya Kasada and Wulan Kapitu, according to the park's notices. In 2025 it closed 28 March to 1 April and 10 to 13 June, and in December 2025 and January 2026 for two phases of Wulan Kapitu. In 2026 it closed around 19 to 21 March and 30 May to 2 June. The dates are announced weeks ahead and change each year.

Is Mount Bromo closed in March 2027?

No notice had been published when we checked on 3 November 2026. Nyepi is on Monday 8 March 2027 and Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March, according to the government's decree summary, so a closure around those days is likely on the pattern of 2025 and 2026. It is not confirmed.

What is Wulan Kapitu?

A traditional ritual period of the Tengger community, linked in press reports to the sacred observance called Megeng or Pati Geni. For 2025-26 the park closed the Tengger caldera to tourists and motor vehicles in two phases of about a day and a half. We found no dates for the 2026-27 edition.

Do foreigners pay more at weekends at Bromo?

Not under the schedule in force since 30 October 2024. The foreign rate is Rp255,000 per person per day on weekdays and holidays alike. The holiday surcharge applies to Indonesian visitors, who pay Rp54,000 on a weekday and Rp79,000 on a holiday. Confirm the figure when you book.

Do I need to book Bromo online?

The park's news page says entry requires online registration, in an item dated 16 October 2024. Officials have also urged visitors to buy tickets online and early after closures. We could not open the booking page ourselves, so use the link on the park's own website.

What are the Bromo opening hours?

We could not confirm a published daily schedule, so we are not giving one. What the notices do show is that closures begin at 00:01, 00:00, 06:00 or 15:00 depending on the event, which matters because tours start around midnight. Ask your operator for the hour a closure takes effect.
