Bromo in Seven Stops from Malang, Including Bukit Cinta
Seven stops instead of the usual three, which is the reason to take this one over a plain sunrise run. The viewpoint is at Penanjakan, also called King Kong hill, two to two and a half hours from Malang, with the sun usually up at 04:30. One thing the operator states plainly and most do not: on arrival the driver asks to rest until 06:00, because the morning road is rougher than the one you came in on and he is the one who has to drive it. So the viewpoint is yours without a guide beside you. Dress for it. Nights at Bromo run between 0 and 12 °C. Jackets can be rented at the viewpoint for 20,000 to 30,000 rupiah, and there is a local coffee shop; ask the price before you order, which is the operator's own advice. After sunrise: Bukit Cinta, the Love Hill, where the Tengger place Joko Seger and Roro Anteng, the couple they descend from. Pura Luhur Poten, 200 metres from the car park, the centre of Tengger Hindu worship. Widodaren, 2,614 metres, part of the Tengger caldera and known as the dinosaur valley. The Bromo crater itself. The Whispering Sands, Pasir Berbisik. The Teletubbies Hills, otherwise the savannah. And the Rainbow waterfall, if the day still has room in it. Pick-up and drop-off from anywhere in Malang. Entrance tickets, local guide, transport with fuel and parking are all included, and the driver speaks basic English.

BUKIT CINTA (LOVE HILL)
Bukit Cinta, the Love Hill. The Tengger hold this to be the place of Joko Seger and Roro Anteng, the couple they count as the ancestors of the Tengger people who live around Mount Bromo, which makes it the most romantic spot in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The belief attached to it: if you keep thinking about the person you love on the way here from the viewpoint, you will end up sharing your life with them.
Luhur Poten Temple
Pura Luhur Poten is a Hindu temple at the foot of Mount Bromo, and the centre of religious life for the Tengger, most of whom are Hindu. It is a 200-metre walk from the car park.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
Widodaren, the dinosaur valley. Mount Widodaren stands close to Bromo, 2,614 metres above sea level, and is part of the Tengger caldera. The thing to do here is have your photograph taken in front of the jeep with the mountains behind it.
Gunung Penanjakan
The sunrise viewpoint at Penanjakan, or King Kong hill, is the first part of the park you reach, two to two and a half hours from Malang city. Sunrise usually comes at 04:30. On arrival the driver will ask to rest until 06:00. The morning road is bumpier than the one driven overnight from Malang, and he has to drive it, so the request is a reasonable one. It does mean you take in Penanjakan without a guide. Night temperatures at Bromo run from 0 to 12 °C and lift once the sun is up. An extra jacket can be rented at the viewpoint for 20,000 to 30,000 rupiah. There is a local coffee shop for the wait: ask the price first, to avoid a surprise at the end.
