Bromo and Ijen in Three Days, Ending at the Ketapang Ferry
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
SurabayaTwo volcanoes, three days, and an early alarm on each of them. Bromo gives you a grey moonlike plain. Ijen gives you the most acidic lake in the world, green-blue, and the blue fire that only exists in the dark. Night one is at Cemara Lawang, in the Cafe Lava hotel or similar, close enough to the park entrance to walk around the village: the Hindu Tengger area, the market, coffee in somebody's house, the fields. Night two is in Bondowoso, at the Ijen View Hotel. The Bromo morning starts at 3:30, with a 45-minute jeep run to the King Kong viewpoint at 2,600 metres. Bring a jacket and long trousers, because it is cold up there. After sunrise the jeep drops into the sea of sand, and the walk to the crater rim takes another 45 minutes. Ijen is a midnight departure and a two-hour drive to Paltuding, where the local guide hands out gas masks. Two things worth reading twice: blue fire is not lava, it is volcanic gas reacting with air, and going down into the crater is dangerous. That part is for people in good physical condition and it is done at your own risk. The sulphur miners work from early morning until around noon. What is not included matters here. Lunches and dinners are not, nor the horses at Bromo, nor personal expenses. An English-speaking guide is added only if you are four or more. The tour ends at Ketapang harbour, with the ferry to Bali in front of you; going back to Surabaya instead costs USD 25.

After you checked in at your hotel
Once you have checked in, the driver takes you around Cemara Lawang village, which sits close to the Bromo entrance. The Hindu Tengger area and its culture: the local market, a cup of coffee in someone's house, a walk through the fields.
Madakaripura Waterfall
A stop at Madakaripura waterfall before the hotel at Bromo. From the car park a motorbike takes you to the entrance gate, and a local guide comes with you, which is obligatory rather than optional. Then the waterfall itself, and the quiet around it.
It's one of the good Spot to see the sunset
One of the better places for sunset here, with the Bromo crater and the sea of sand both in view.
You will start at 3
A 3:30 am start from the hotel, then about 45 minutes by jeep to Kingkong View Point at 2,600 m for the sunrise. Wear a jacket and long trousers, because it will be cold. There is a hot drink while you wait for it.
Sand Sea
Once the sun is up, the jeep driver is ready. The road drops into the black volcanic sea of sand. Ask him to stop if you want to walk in it; otherwise he takes you to the parking area where the Bromo hike starts.
Luhur Poten Temple
The jeep parks near the Luhur Poten temple, which the local Hindu community still uses. It is usually closed, but if you find it open, ask whether you can look inside.
Mount Bromo
From there it is a 45-minute walk to the top of Bromo. Take your time in the grey ground up there. Bromo is an active volcano and not the highest peak, sitting in the middle of the sand sea, a protected nature reserve since 1919. The Indonesian Center of Volcanology issues warnings according to how active it is.
Once back at your Jeep, you will return to your hotel
Back at the jeep, then back to the hotel, where there is breakfast and a shower before check-out and the road to Bondowoso.
The drive to Bondowoso takes about 5 to 6 hours
The drive to Bondowoso takes five to six hours. Bukit Bintang Arak Arak is a good place to stretch your legs, with small local restaurants for tea, coffee and something to eat.
Ijen Crater Indonesia
The blue fire only exists at night, so the departure is at midnight. The drive to Paltuding, where the hike to the crater lake begins, takes about two hours. Ijen is one of the biggest blue fire areas in the world. It is not lava: it is a chemical reaction between gases the volcano releases and the air. At Paltuding the local guide is waiting with gas masks. Climbing down into the crater of an active volcano with the most acidic lake in the world is dangerous. This part is only for people in good physical condition, and it is done at your own risk. Then back up to the caldera for sunrise over the crater lake, green-blue inside brown walls. Take the time.
Jagir Waterfall
Jagir waterfall is on the road to Ketapang harbour, and worth a stop if you have the time and the legs left.
Ketapang Ferry
Drop-off is at Ketapang harbour, where the ferry to Bali leaves from. Going back to Surabaya instead is possible for an extra USD 25.
Not included
- Lunch & Dinner
- Horse Riding in Bromo Crater
- drop off Surabaya costs USD 25
