Bromo Sunrise from Midnight, with a Meal at Lava View Restaurant
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
SurabayaThe day starts at midnight. That is the honest headline: the guide collects you from wherever you are staying in Surabaya or Malang at around that hour, and the first stretch of the drive is for sleeping in the car. Where the tarmac gives out, a 4WD takes over, up a road bumpy in a way people remember, towards Mount Penanjakan and then King Kong Hill. Coffee while the horizon works itself out, and a guide who fills the wait with Bromo stories instead of silence. Once the sun is up the volcano is in front of you, and there is time for photographs before anyone moves. The trek then goes to the caldera, with the guide alongside. The day finishes at the Lava View Restaurant, over a meal, and then the drive back to Surabaya or Malang. Private, all-inclusive, and done inside one day, which is what people book it for.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
The 4WD carries on to the King Kong Hills viewpoint. Coffee while you wait for the sun to come over the horizon, and a guide who fills the wait with Bromo stories told for laughs rather than as a lecture.
