Most Fuji day trips feed you. This one puts you to work first. Hōtō is the dish of Yamanashi: thick flat noodles, made by hand, in a miso broth with whatever vegetables the season gives. You make yours, and then you eat it, which changes lunch from a stop into part of the day. Before that, the Kawaguchiko Appare cruise puts Mount Fuji across the water from you, and Oishi Park puts flowers in front of it. After lunch, Oshino Hakkai, where the ponds are fed by spring water off the mountain and the paths are quiet. The last stop is Arakurayama Sengen Park, where the five-storey pagoda stands with Fuji behind it. In cherry blossom season the photographers arrive in numbers, and the steps up are worth taking anyway. An English-speaking guide comes with the tour, and audio guidance is available in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Ukrainian as well. Check-in is at 7:20 by the LOVE statue in Shinjuku, departure at 7:30, and the drop-off at Shinjuku Station is around 17:30 if the traffic behaves. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
