At Arakura Sengen Shrine

This is not a fixed itinerary. It is a car, a licensed guide and a driver for the day, and a list of places to choose from. There are two lists: one built around Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko, the other around Mt. Fuji and Hakone. The usual starting point is Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, where the five-storey Chureito Pagoda stands in front of the mountain, which is the photograph most people have already seen before they arrive. From there the day can take in the reflections on Lake Kawaguchiko, a village of straw-roofed houses with craftspeople working in them, or Aokigahara, the sea of trees, where the lava caves are. Some choices come with conditions worth knowing before you pick them. The 5th Station, at 2,300 metres and the highest point a car can reach, needs a 2,100 yen toll paid on the spot, takes about two hours, and is closed from July to mid-September for the climbing season and again in winter. The Ide sake brewery, the only one in Kawaguchiko using meltwater off the mountain, opens for tastings from 3 pm at 1,500 yen and has to be booked. The fruit park and the strawberry farm also need reservations. Shiraito Falls is two hours there and back from Lake Kawaguchiko. The guide and driver will say what is worth seeing in the season you are travelling in, which is most of what you are paying for by taking a car instead of a seat on a bus.

What's included

  • Round-trip private transportation by air-conditioned minivan
  • One bottled water per person
  • Private guide (English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean professional guides are available)
  • Hotel pickup/drop-off
