Hakone in a day out of Tokyo, with the volcanic side of it kept in view. Hakone Shrine was founded in 757, and its red torii stands in the water of Lake Ashi, which is the photograph people come for. The pirate ship cruise across the lake is optional and not included: tickets run about USD 12 and are paid on the spot. Anyone who skips it rides the tour bus to the next stop instead, so the choice costs nothing but the fare. The Hakone Ropeway climbs over Owakudani, and the valley below is an active volcanic field, steaming through its vents. At Owakudani the eggs are boiled in the sulphurous water until the shells turn black. Eating one is said to add years to your life, and enough people believe it that the queue is real. Yamanakako, the swan lake, is one of the five lakes of Mount Fuji, and the birds and the mountain end up in the same frame. Oshino Hakkai closes the day: eight clear ponds fed by snowmelt off Fuji, with the mountain reflected in them. Departures leave at 7:30 from Tokyo Station or 8:00 from Shinjuku. The guide holds a yellow flag. Arrive 15 minutes early. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
