Eight places around Mount Fuji in one day, out of Tokyo or Shinjuku, and each of them frames the mountain differently. Lake Kawaguchi came out of an eruption ten thousand years ago and has been UNESCO-listed since 2013 as part of the Fujisan cultural site. Its shoreline bends enough to give a dozen angles on the mountain, and on a still day the water holds the whole cone. Oishi Park has a flower road 350 metres long, planted so that something is out in every season: cherry blossom, then lavender, then autumn colour, then reeds in the snow. From the second floor of the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center, the red torii lines up with the summit. The Lawson convenience store is on the list because a blue shopfront under Mount Fuji became one of the most photographed views in Japan. The ice cream inside is a bonus. Oshino Hakkai is eight springs fed by snowmelt off the mountain, counted among the hundred famous waters of Japan. The water is free to drink and carries a legend of long life. The village around it sells udon, soba, kusamochi and kushidango. Arakurayama Sengen Park is named among 21 places photographers should see in a lifetime. The Chureito Pagoda stands above it, five storeys, up nearly 400 steps. The Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine was built in 705. When Fuji erupted in 807 and the country panicked, this is where the fire-control ceremony was held. The last stop is the Hikawa Clock Shop on Shimoyoshida Honcho Street, at the foot of the street they call the stairway to Mount Fuji. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

  1. Lake Kawaguchiko

Lake Kawaguchi is called the pearl of the five Fuji lakes, and its broken shoreline gives one viewpoint after another. An eruption ten thousand years ago made both the lake and the view. In 2013 it became part of the Fujisan UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk the shore with the mountain behind you and, when the water is still, in front of you as well.

  2. Oishi Park

Oishi Park is known for what is in flower. The Flowers Road on the west side runs 350 metres and is planted for the whole year: cherry blossom in spring, lavender in summer, autumn colour, then reeds and snow. The photograph everyone takes has the lake, the flowers and Mount Fuji in the same frame.

  3. On the second floor of the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center

From the second floor of the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center, the red torii and Mount Fuji line up in a single shot.

  4. Instagram-famous spot near Mount Fuji

The convenience store that became a photograph: a modern blue frontage with Mount Fuji directly behind it. Ice cream, drinks and local snacks inside once the picture is taken.

  5. Oshino Hakkai

Oshino Hakkai is a World Heritage site of eight clear springs fed by snowmelt from Fuji, and one of the hundred famous waters of Japan. The water is free to taste, and a legend of long life goes with it. The village around it shows how rural Japan works, with the mountain over it, and sells udon, soba, kusamochi and kushidango.

  6. Arakurayama Sengen Park

A park in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi, counted among 21 places photographers should get to once in their lives. The Chureito Pagoda has five storeys and stands on the hillside over the city and the mountain. Nearly 400 steps get you there, and the view is rated among the best in Japan.

  7. Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine

Built in 705, so more than 1,300 years old, and a place people come to pray for family and wellbeing. When Mount Fuji erupted on a large scale in 807 and the country was frightened, the shrine held a fire-control ceremony, asking for peace and for the mountain to settle.

  8. At Shimoyoshida Honcho Street

The Hikawa Clock Shop on Shimoyoshida Honcho Street, at the bottom of what people call the stairway to Mount Fuji.
