Etna Sunset from the Rifugio Sapienza at 2,000 m
Ratings collected by Civitatis
Piazza dei Martiri, 19The sunset is watched from the Rifugio Sapienza, at 2,000 metres, which is as far up the south side as the road goes. The vehicle leaves from a central point in Catania and works its way up through the park, stopping at viewpoints along the way. The route takes in the forests on the mountain, caves formed inside lava that set around them, and the Valle del Bove, a depression cut by cones more than 100,000 years old. There is a tasting on the way: wine, liqueur and honey, all made on Etna's own ground, which is about as fertile as volcanic soil gets. At Sapienza the sky turns pink and orange behind the mountain, and then the vehicle goes back down. Five to six hours in total.
