El Grifo: the 1775 Founding Stone and the Century-Old Chabocos
The founding stone of this winery is dated 1775, and it is still here, kept in the old winery where the original press stands. That building is now the Wine Museum. Outside are the chabocos, the hollows the vines grow in, some of them a century old. The wines made here are described as volcanic and heroic, and both words are doing literal work. The visit also takes in the Family House and the library, which was inaugurated by the poet José Hierro and endorsed by the Nobel laureate José Saramago. Visits are limited to twelve people, and the guides are the winery's own. On arrival, head for the reception marked Entrance. That is where the check-in happens and where the walk begins.
