Eight people is the limit, and that is the first thing separating this from a coach on the same roads. Private, guided, and run by people who would rather have a small group than a full one. The route goes down the south of the island. Los Charcones first, where hardened lava along the shore has trapped seawater in pools calm enough to sit in and lose track of the time. Then the Salinas de Janubio, the largest salt flats in the Canaries, seen from the mirador above and then from among the pans, with the shop where the Janubio salt is sold. Salt was the island's white gold until a few decades ago, and these pans still make it. Below them is the black beach of the same name. The lava rock there holds olivine, green crystals formed as the lava met the sea, and some of the rock came out red instead. There is a stop at the Stop de Yaiza, a tapas bar working from recipes that date to 1890, with Malvasía Volcánica from the house. The brunch on this trip is Canarian throughout, and the volcano wines are part of the day. La Geria closes it: the wine country where the growers dug their vines down into the volcanic ash, which is why the fields look like nothing else. The wineries are visited. The tasting there is free and not included in the price.

What's included

  • Water cooler in the car for the day, Canarian tapas brunch & wine included, La Geria winery taste also included.

  1. Los Charcones

Lanzarote is ringed by wild, near-empty beaches with very little swell. In places the water sits so still that natural pools form, and where old lava hardened along the shore it has left pools and puddles at the waterline where you can soak and lose track of the time.

  2. Estatua De Los Salineros Y Salineras De Janubio

First the view from the Mirador de Las Salinas de Janubio, then down among the salt lagoons themselves, past the shop that sells the natural Janubio salts. These are the largest salt flats in the Canaries and count for as much architecturally as culturally. They still produce what was called white gold, and salt mattered to the island's economy until not many decades ago. The lagoon is there because eruptions laid a lava barrier in front of the sea, and the same rock made the black beach beside it, sand and small dark stones against the white of the surf.

  3. Playa del Janubio

The black beach at Janubio, where the big lava rocks hold olivine, green crystals formed as the lava crystallised against the sea. Some of the rock came out fiery red instead. Walking the beach looking for them takes longer than you expect.

  4. Bar Stop

The Stop de Yaiza tapas bar, where the recipes date to 1890 and the Malvasía Volcánica is the house wine. A stop for a few tapas and a rest before the last leg.

  5. La Geria

La Geria, the wine country and the cleverest thing on the island to look at: the growers dug their vines down into the volcanic ash, and the fields have looked like nothing else since. The wineries are visited. The tasting is free and not included in the price.

Not included
