Whale Watching and Lava Show: Real Lava from the 1918 Katla Eruption
Two things in one day, and two ways to arrange them: whale watching at 09:00 with the Lava Show at 14:00, or whale watching at 13:00 with the show at 18:00. The boat goes out for the sea life, and it gives you the Reykjavík skyline from the water, which is a different city from the one you walk around. The Lava Show is the only live one in the world, and the detail that makes it worth the ticket is what gets melted. The lava is real, and it comes from the 1918 Katla eruption. They superheat it until it runs, then pour it into a showroom with an audience sitting a few feet away. The room warms up immediately. You see it move, you hear it, you smell it, and the heat reaches you where you sit. Four senses, which is three more than a photograph gives. The meeting point is the Special Tours ticket office at Geirsgata 11. Arrive 30 minutes before.
