Whakarewarewa Village: Two Hundred Years of Guiding, and Corn Cooked in a Hot Pool
Whakarewarewa is not a reconstruction. It is the home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao, who have been receiving visitors here for over two hundred years, and people live in it. The guides are descendants of the early Māori guides whose work built tourism in New Zealand in the first place. The tour is called a Legacy tour for that reason: the family line and the job are the same thing here. The ground the village stands on boils. Mud pools and hot springs sit between the buildings, and the Pōhutu Geyser is visible from two viewing platforms built for the purpose. Cooking in the hot pools is daily practice rather than demonstration, and the tour includes a piece of corn on the cob cooked in the largest one. Geothermal water gives food a taste that nothing in a kitchen reproduces, which is the argument for eating it here rather than reading about it. Manaakitanga, the hospitality the village is known for, is what the guides bring to it. Cancel at least 24 hours before the booked time for a full refund.

Iconic Guided Tour is the legacy guided Village experience…
The village is home to the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao, who have shared their way of living and their stories with visitors from everywhere for more than two hundred years. The guided walk continues that line of work, with village people leading it and manaakitanga as the register. Boiling mud and hot spring pools sit through the village, and the Pōhutu Geyser can be watched safely from two platforms. The tour includes a piece of corn on the cob cooked in the largest hot pool, which is how kai gets cooked here.
