Te Puia Tour, Haka Show & Lunch Small Group Tour from Auckland

Most day tours out of Auckland pair Te Puia with something else and give it ninety minutes. This one goes to Te Puia and nowhere else, which is the entire argument for it. The ticket includes the guided tour of the geothermal park with Pōhutu, the Māori cultural village and the arts school, the cultural performance with the haka, and a traditional hāngī buffet lunch cooked in the ground. That combination takes time, and the schedule allows for it rather than hurrying you back to the van. Cheeky Kiwi Travel runs the day in small groups with modern minibuses. The drive south crosses the Waikato, which the operator rates the most extensive farming country in the world, with a coffee stop somewhere chosen for the purpose, and passes Tirau and its corrugated iron sculptures. Rotorua closes with a guided drive past the lake, the museum, the Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) and the Blue Baths, with a souvenir stop and Manuka honey if the clock allows. The return north is guided too, with stops that are not on any itinerary. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Itinerary

The map could not be loaded. Please try again in a moment.

  1. Auckland Central

Auckland Central is where the day starts, and the drive out is also the introduction to it.

  2. Waikato Region

South through the Waikato, the most extensive farming area in the world by the operator's reckoning, with rivers, mountains and animals in the fields. A coffee stop is built into this stretch.

  3. Tirau

Tirau on the way to Rotorua: corrugated iron sculptures and buildings everywhere, which is how it got the title. The guide names the ones to look for.

  4. Te Puia

Te Puia is the destination, on a fully guided tour: Pōhutu Geyser, Māori architecture, the National Māori Arts School, geothermal craters and vents, and the kiwi viewing house. The ticket also covers the Māori cultural performance and a traditional hāngī buffet lunch.

  5. Rotorua

Rotorua at the end, from the vehicle: the lake, the museum, the Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring), the Blue Baths. Time permitting there is a souvenir shop with discounts and Manuka honey to taste.

  6. Auckland

The drive north is guided as well, with stops nobody announces beforehand.
