The Hobbiton set is 12 acres of working farmland with 44 hobbit holes built into it, and this day gives you two and a half hours inside it. You board one of the green Hobbiton buses at the gate and go round with a Hobbiton guide, through the pastures of the Shire, past the gardens, and into the stories about how the films were made on this hillside. A cold drink at the Green Dragon Inn comes with the ticket. Then the road to Rotorua, through Tirau, which calls itself the corrugated iron capital of the world on the strength of its sculptures and buildings, and Te Puia at the other end: Pōhutu Geyser, Māori architecture, the National Māori Arts School, geothermal craters, and the kiwi viewing house. Cheeky Kiwi Travel runs the day in small groups and modern minibuses, and puts as much weight on the guide and the drive as on the two attractions. Rotorua finishes with a guided drive past the lake, the museum, the Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) and the Blue Baths, plus a souvenir stop with Manuka honey if the day runs to time. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

  1. Auckland Central

Out of New Zealand's largest city, with the guide framing the day and naming the Auckland sights as they pass.

  2. Waikato Region

The Waikato countryside south of Auckland, called the most extensive farming area in the world: rivers, mountains, farm animals and views worth stopping for.

  3. Hobbiton Movie Set

At Hobbiton you board one of the big green buses and go out on a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour of the 12-acre set with a Hobbiton guide. The route covers the pastures of the Shire, 44 hobbit holes and the gardens, with the stories behind the making of the films, and finishes with a cold drink at the Green Dragon Inn.

  4. Tirau

Tirau on the way to Rotorua, the self-styled corrugated iron capital of the world, where the sculptures and buildings get a laugh out of every group. The guide points out the best.

  5. Te Puia

Te Puia is the second main stop, on a fully guided tour: Pōhutu Geyser, Māori architecture, the National Māori Arts School, geothermal craters and vents, and the kiwi viewing house.

  6. Rotorua

The last of Rotorua is done from the vehicle: the lake, the museum, the Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring), the Blue Baths. Time allowing, a stop at a souvenir shop with discounts and Manuka honey.

  7. Auckland

Then north, with the guide still working and a couple of unannounced stops on the way.
