Walking the Rim of Mount Tarawera: the Crater That Erupted in 1886
Every other tour in Rotorua points at Mount Tarawera from across a lake. This one goes up it. The eruption of 1886 is what the mountain is known for, and the crater it opened is where the walk leads. The trail winds up to the rim, and from the edge the geothermal country below is laid out in one view. A 4WD vehicle handles the access and collects from hotels in central Rotorua, because the mountain is not reachable on an ordinary road. The guide carries the history, which on this mountain is not decoration: the ground underfoot is the evidence for it. Meet outside the Wheelhouse Coffee Shop, where parking is free. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
