Four Rotorua Lakes in a WWII Amphibious Duck: Three of Them Entered by Water
Two hours across the Rotorua lakes district in a genuine Second World War amphibious duck, which drives to a lake, keeps going, and floats. Four lakes on the route, three of them entered by water. Lake Tarawera, at the foot of the mountain, is where the tour spends its best fifteen to twenty minutes, and there is a stop at the Landing Café on its shore. The commentary is the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera: what it did to the land and to the people living under it. The Buried Village of Te Wairoa is on the route, seen from the vehicle, and it is the plainest evidence of what that night cost. Other stops: Lake Okareka, the Blue Lake, and the Redwoods Treewalk, which the tour passes and explains rather than walks. The whole thing takes 120 minutes, the group stays small and the seats are proper seats. One firm rule: be at the meeting point twenty minutes before departure. Anyone late is moved to the next available departure rather than held for. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
