Volcanic Wine on Terceira: Biscoitos and Full Bottles on the Table
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Angra do HeroísmoVolcanic wine comes from eight places in the world, and this is one of them. Volcanic soils cover about 1 percent of the earth's surface and account for a much larger share of its great vineyards. The wine here is micro-production, grown in volcanic basalt at sea level, less than 50 m from the Atlantic. That terroir, and the blend of varieties planted in it, is what puts the minerality in the glass, along with the salt, the stony flavours and the savoury finish. Minerality and volcanic wine go together. The day covers the wine museum and a winery at Biscoitos, the ground the grapes grow in, the natural ocean pools, and a tasting in the garden of an Azorean family.

Muzeum Winiarstwa W Biscoitos
The wine museum and the winery, with a guide, the cellar, and the producer's own wine to taste. (The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. On those days another winery is visited instead, or the wine is tasted at the picnic area.)
Biscoitos
The volcanic terroir. A walk over the ground the grapes come out of, which explains the wine better than a label does, plus the village in the north of the island and its well known natural ocean pools.
In a relaxing atmosphere in the garden of an Azorean family
A tasting in the garden of an Azorean family, unhurried: several different Azorean volcanic wines, at least three of them, full bottles on the table, with the flavours of the island to eat alongside.
Miradouro Do Facho
The viewpoint, and then a short visit to the small town by the beach below it.
