Terceira Underground: a Lava Tube and the Inside of a Volcano
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
TerceiraTwo different ways of getting under Terceira in one half-day. The Gruta do Natal is a lava tube, a tunnel left behind by a flow, and you walk through it. The Algar do Carvão is the other kind entirely: the inside of a volcano, in the middle of the island. The Furnas do Enxofre come between them. Volcanic gas escapes there at a range of temperatures, some of them very high, and a short footpath runs close enough to see the sulphur smoke coming out of the ground. The Lagoa das Patas is the quiet stop. The stream that comes down off the Serra de Santa Bárbara runs through it, and there are ducks and other birds around the water. The Lagoa do Negro is seen at the same stop as the lava tube.

Lagoa Das Patas
The first stop is the Lagoa das Patas, a place most visitors never hear about. The stream that runs down from the Serra de Santa Bárbara passes through, there is the lagoon itself, and ducks and other birds that are used to people. A picnic area with plenty going on in it.
Here we will visit the famous Gruta Natal and Lagoa do Negro
The Gruta do Natal and the Lagoa do Negro. Here you walk through lava tunnels that nothing but the volcano built, with the Lagoa do Negro right there to look at.
