Two Telescopes at Minas de San José: Watching and Photographing
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
TenerifeTwo telescopes work at once on this one. The first is for looking through: Saturn with its rings, Jupiter with its moons, then nebulae, galaxies and star clusters. The second does nothing but astrophotography, capturing the objects in real time, and those images are sent to you afterwards. Teide National Park is reckoned one of the three best places on Earth to look at the sky. Over 2,000 metres up, more than 300 clear nights a year, and almost no light pollution. The evening opens with the naked eye, before any glass is involved: the constellations, the bright planets, the Milky Way, and the mythology attached to each figure. The telescopes come after that. Groups are kept small, so everyone gets time at the eyepiece and the Starlight-certified guide can answer questions one at a time. The operator has been running this for more than 20 years.

Mines of San Jose
Meet in the car park in front of the natural area of Minas de San José. Coming from the south it is the second car park on the right; coming from the north, the first on the left.
Teide National Park
1. Welcome and sky orientation, in Teide National Park at 2,200 m. You arrive at the meeting point inside the park, which is UNESCO World Heritage, and walk a short way to the observation point. The Starlight-certified guide starts with the naked eye: Polaris, the constellations, the zodiac, the planets that are up. No prior knowledge is needed. 2. Telescopes and live astrophotography, same place. Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons, galaxies such as Andromeda, nebulae such as Orion, clusters such as the Pleiades, all through professional telescopes. The groups are small, so nobody queues long at the eyepiece. A second telescope shoots astrophotography live, and those images are emailed to you after the tour. 3. End of the tour, back at the meeting point. A short walk back under the stars, which is when the last questions get asked, under one of the three best stargazing skies on Earth.
