Self-Drive: a Canarian Dinner at 7 Cañadas, Then the Stars
The version with dinner. You drive up yourself, arriving at the Restaurante 7 Cañadas at La Orotava for 6.45 pm, and the evening starts at the table rather than on the terrace. Dinner is three Canarian courses with drinks, eaten 2,130 metres above the sea with the volcanic plains and the old lava fields out of the window. Then the light goes. Sunset happens above the sea of clouds, with a glass of chilled cava or orange juice, and Teide standing at 3,718 metres against it. After dark the Starlight-certified guides bring out the telescopes and the laser pointers and go through planets, constellations and galaxies in several languages, with the mythology and the science and a certain amount of humour. Transport is not included in this one. Getting up there is on you.

Drive yourself to the Restaurante 7 Cañadas at La Orotava for 6.45 pm, where the group meets for dinner. It sits 2,130 metres up inside Teide National Park, which makes it an odd place for a restaurant and a good one for what comes after. Dinner is Canarian, with drinks, and the windows look out over volcanic plains, old lava fields and the shapes that make this the most recognisable ground on Tenerife.
After dinner, the sky begins its quiet transformation
After dinner the light starts to change. Sunset here is above the sea of clouds. A glass of chilled cava, or orange juice, as the colour comes up and the sun goes down behind Teide, the highest point in Spain at 3,718 metres.
As twilight deepens
Once twilight has gone the guides start work. The night skies over this park are among the clearest anywhere, and the group is taken through them in several languages: what the constellations meant to the people who named them, what astronomy says is actually there, and how to photograph any of it.
