Pick-up at your accommodation, and a small group at both sites. Pompeii takes two hours with an archaeological guide, working the western half of the city: the Basilica, the Forum, the thermal baths, the bakery and a number of the houses. That is what two hours covers honestly, and it is enough to see how the place worked before the eruption of 79 AD. Then the drive up Vesuvius. The road ends at the square at 1,000 metres above sea level, and the walk goes on from there along the Gran Cono path, which leads to the crater. The Gulf of Naples is below you for most of the climb. The group is returned to the same accommodation at the end.
