The Queen's Shoe and 12 Million Cubic Metres of Lava, Small Group
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
TenerifeTenerife Stars have been guiding on this island for more than ten years, and they keep the groups small on purpose. The alternative is a coach with far too many people on it. The day starts at Vilaflor, around 1,500 metres, with a walk round the square and a coffee in a local cafeteria while the altitude settles. Then El Pino Gordo, one of the oldest Canary pines on the island, and a viewpoint that takes in the whole south-east, from the southern airport down to Los Cristianos, with Gran Canaria across the water and the pine forest close enough to smell. Inside the national park, at Boca Tauce, the lava on the ground comes from different periods, and both Teide and Pico Viejo are in view. Pico Viejo is the second highest peak in Tenerife and in the Canaries at 3,135 metres. It last erupted in 1798, from vents on its flank known as the noses of Teide, and put out around 12 million cubic metres of black lava in 92 days. There is the Queen's Shoe as well, a rock that thousands of years of weather have worn into the shape of a high-heeled shoe, and the Roques de García, the most photographed rocks in the park, where there is a cafeteria and time to walk. The last stops look west over Adeje, Los Gigantes and the Teno mountains, with La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro out at sea and pines growing straight out of volcanic rock. From there it is half an hour to 40 minutes back to the hotel.

Vilaflor
Time in Vilaflor for a walk round the square and the quiet centre of the village, and a stop at a local cafeteria for coffee or something sweet. It also gets the body used to the altitude, around 1,500 metres, before going higher.
El Pino Gordo
One of the oldest Canary pines on the island, and thick enough that the size registers before the age does. A good stop for a photograph.
This is a unique point of view
A viewpoint over the east of Tenerife: Gran Canaria across the water, and the whole south-east of the island from the southern airport down to Los Cristianos. The pine forest of Vilaflor is close enough to smell.
Mirador de Boca Tauce
Inside Teide National Park, where the lava on the ground comes from different periods, and both the Teide and Pico Viejo volcanoes are in front of you. This is the stop where the scale of what volcanic activity has done to Tenerife becomes obvious.
At this special place
Cliffs on every side, and one rock in particular: the Queen's Shoe. Thousands of years of weather and extreme temperatures have worn it into the shape of a high-heeled shoe, which is where the name came from.
Los Roques de Garcia
The high point of the national park. Lunar ground, lava fields and the strange rock shapes of the Roques de García, the most photographed rocks in the park and the reason people compare the place to Mars. There is time here to walk about, and a cafeteria for a drink or a sit on the terrace.
Here at the volcano Pico Viejo we will be able to enjoy the…
Pico Viejo, the second highest peak in Tenerife and in the Canary Islands at 3,135 m above sea level. It last erupted in 1798, from vents on its flank known as the noses of Teide, and put out around 12 million cubic metres of black lava in 92 days. La Gomera is in view from here as well.
This is one of our final stops where we will have a great…
One of the last stops, with La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro all across the water. The ground here is volcanic material with pine trees growing straight out of the rock, and the eruptions of the past are readable in it, including the last one, from the Chinyero volcano.
Here we'll have our final stop
The final stop, looking over the west of the island from Adeje all the way to Los Gigantes and the Teno mountains, with La Gomera and La Palma out at sea. There is a cafeteria here for a coffee or a snack. From here it is back onto the motorway and to the hotel in about half an hour to 40 minutes.
