A small-group day in Teide National Park, with a short walk to the Sámara crater that the coach routes do not include. Vilaflor comes first, one of the highest municipalities in Spain at almost 1,500 metres, where there is good local coffee and a chance to let the altitude settle before going higher. Then El Pino Gordo, the oldest and thickest pine on Tenerife, and the Mirador de Boca Tauce, where the lava field opens out with Teide behind it. The long stop is at the Roques de García, the most visited place in the national park. At Pico Viejo the ground came out in 1798, in an eruption that ran for 92 days, and the craters it left are still there to look at. Further round, the lava is on a scale that does not photograph well, and on a clear day La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro sit out on the water.
