The waterfall comes first. Tegenungan is one of the most visited in Bali, so the way down is concrete steps with a safety rail the whole way to the pool at the bottom, which makes it manageable for people who would not attempt a jungle scramble. On the way down there are the photo spots everyone stops at, and Baby Tegenungan, a smaller fall that is not going to impress anybody who has just seen the big one. Tirta Empul comes next, one of the busiest water temples in Indonesia and sacred to the Balinese Hindu community. Its holy springs are said to have been made by the god Indra, and the water is held to purify anyone who bathes in it. Then Kintamani, up in the hills, where the view is of Mount Batur, active, and Lake Batur lying wide in the valley below it. Lunch is a buffet at a restaurant with the volcano and its crater lake directly in front of the tables. The afternoon is Ubud: the Tegallalang rice terraces, cut into a cliff north of the town, the art market, which is where the silk scarves, woven bags, baskets, hats, statues and kites are, and Ubud Palace, officially Puri Saren Agung. The tour is private, and the guide fills the drives with the island and the people on it.

  1. Tegenungan Waterfall

One of the most popular waterfalls in Bali, which is why the path is well maintained and safe to walk. It is a short walk down concrete steps, with a safety rail that runs all the way to the pool at the foot of the falls. On the way down you pass the photo spots everybody stops at, and Baby Tegenungan, which does not have much on its big brother.

  2. Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul is one of the busiest water temples in Indonesia, and sacred to the Balinese Hindu community. It has several holy springs, said to have been created by the god Indra, and the water is held to purify anyone who bathes in it.

  3. Kintamani Highland

Kintamani is countryside up in the hills, with the view all around it. From there you look across at Mount Batur, an active volcano, and at the wide Lake Batur down in the valley. Cold mountain air, and then the buffet lunch, at a restaurant facing the volcano and its crater lake.

  4. Tegalalang Rice Terrace

Tegalalang Rice Terrace is one of the best known sights in Bali, in Tegalalang village north of Ubud, with the terraces cut into the cliff.

  5. Ubud Art Market

Ubud Market is the best art market in Bali: silk scarves, light shirts, handmade woven bags, baskets and hats, statues, kites, and a great deal else made by hand.

  6. Ubud Palace

Ubud Palace, officially Puri Saren Agung. The buildings are traditional and carefully made, and the place is worth the time. Ubud runs on its arts and its culture, which is a different side of Bali from the beaches and the volcanoes.
