Abuan to Payangan by Manual Bike: Gunung Raung Temple, Subak Fields and Greenkubu
A full day on a manual bike, downhill from Abuan in the Kintamani area to Payangan, on roads that run through villages rather than around them. The morning starts with pick-up at your hotel and a drive up to a plantation for a coffee break: pancake, or a smoothie bowl for anyone avoiding gluten, with coffees and teas to taste over the valley. Another 30 minutes brings you to the starting point at Abuan, in a mandarin orange garden, where the bikes are ready and the guides run the safety briefing. The first stop is a traditional Balinese house in Abuan, and the guide works through the architecture: centuries old, Hindu by way of ancient Java, with pre-Hindu Balinese elements underneath. An optional stretch cuts through the forest of Taro, the old village where Gunung Raung Temple stands. It is the first temple built on Bali, put up by Dang Hyang Resi Markandya in the 8th century on his first holy journey to the island, and it sits close to the island's centre. The rice field stop is at Bresela, where the subject is Subak, the irrigation system that organises Balinese farming. Along the way there are stops on local food and on the home industries of stone carving and wood working, and a short photo stop at the Tegallalang rice terrace. The ride finishes at Hyang Api Temple in Payangan, and lunch is at the Greenkubu Cafe before the driver takes you back. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
