Te Puia: Te Rā Guided Experience

Ninety minutes at Te Puia with a kaiārahi, a guide from the place, rather than a map and a route. The walk goes through Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley: geysers, mud that boils, native bush. Pōhutu is the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere and the route brings you close to it. The Kiwi Conservation Centre has a nocturnal enclosure, built dark so the bird is awake when visitors come through. The centre works on keeping the species going, which is why the kiwi is there at all. At the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute students are learning weaving and carving in wood, stone and bone. It is a wānanga, a working school, so what you see is teaching in progress rather than a display case. The guides carry stories handed down through their own families, and how much of the visit lands depends on them. Parking at Te Puia is free. Come in through the main car park to the main entrance. Cancel at least 24 hours before your booked time for a full refund.

  1. 20 Hemo Rd, Whakarewarewa, Rotorua

Come into the main Te Puia car park, where parking is free, and walk to the main entrance.

  2. Te Puia

Te Puia sits in the Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley at Rotorua, on ground that does not let you forget what is underneath it. Pōhutu Geyser is here, and around it the Māori layers of the site: the land, the artworks, the people, the stories, the buildings. Nature trails run through the property with native birds in them, and the kiwi is kept on site. What the guides carry is knowledge passed down from their ancestors, and giving it away is a point of pride. It is the part of a Te Puia visit that people tend to remember.
