The walk gets you to about 300 metres from the crater of a volcano that did not exist before 19 September 2021. The meeting point is the tourist information office at El Paso, and a taxi takes the group up to Llano del Jable, at 1,200 metres (4,000 feet), inside the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park. The drive is used to explain how La Palma was built, and El Hierro too, which is the youngest island in the Canaries. From there the walking is on ash and lapilli. The guide covers what the eruption did to the plants, the work being done to bring the Canary pine back, and which towns took the worst of it. Two and a half kilometres out, and the crater is in front of you, with the lava flow that went through the Aridane valley below. Five kilometres in total, three to three and a half hours. There is a longer version, seven kilometres, which goes closer to the crater. It is open to anyone aged 10 and over.
