The Cueva de las Palomas is a lava tube left by the San Juan volcano when it erupted in 1949, and the guided walk goes through it. The tube runs roughly 560 metres and is about three metres wide. More than ten openings let daylight in at different points along the route, and some of those holes are old fumaroles: lava and hot sulphurous gases came out through them while the tube was still forming. UNESCO lists the cave as a place of natural interest and the Canary Islands government as a natural monument, which puts it inside the Canary Network of Protected Natural Spaces. The geology is the main reason for that, and the invertebrates that live in there are the other half of it. An expert guide leads the group. What to bring: comfortable clothes and proper footwear, a jacket, and rain protection if the weather looks like it. Sun protection, a cap or hat and water are worth having as well. Stay on the marked trails throughout.

  2. • Get into an exciting caving tour of natural interest by…

A caving trip through ground that UNESCO lists as a place of natural interest, on La Palma, led by an expert guide who knows what the cave holds. The Canary Islands government also lists it as a natural monument, which makes it part of the Canary Network of Protected Natural Spaces. The Cueva de las Palomas formed when the San Juan volcano erupted in 1949. More than ten openings let daylight into the route at different points, and some of them are old fumaroles: lava and hot sulphurous gases escaped through those holes while the tube was still setting. The tube is around three metres wide and roughly 560 metres long. The interest in it is mainly geological, and the peculiar invertebrate fauna living inside adds to that.
