La Palma in a Day from Tenerife: the 2021 Lava and La Cumbrecita

A day on La Palma built around the ferry: out of Los Cristianos at 8:30 in the morning, back from Santa Cruz de La Palma at 5 in the afternoon. The itinerary was put together by Basso Lanzone, an official guide with years of work behind him in the Canary Islands, and every stop was picked to fit the island into one day. Santa Cruz de La Palma comes first, the capital, with colonial streets and the wooden balconies it is known for. Then up to the La Cumbrecita viewpoint, inside the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. The part people come for is at Tacande. The Tajogaite volcano, also called Cumbre Vieja, opened on 19 September 2021, and the approach is along a road built on top of the lava. From there you can see the ground where a whole neighbourhood used to be. Below it, at Tazacorte, are the youngest lava flows in Spain, and the Tajuya viewpoint is where television crews from around the world filmed the eruption while it was happening.
