A private car for the day, from Manila to two places that have nothing in common except that both are made of water and rock. Tagaytay Picnic Grove sits at 665 metres, high enough for the air to cool and for Taal to be visible whole: the volcano island standing in the middle of its lake. The 2020 eruption threw ash as far as Metro Manila, and Taal remains one of the most active volcanoes in the country. The viewpoint is outside the 6 km danger zone. Pagsanjan is the other half, and it is physical. A traditional canoe with two local paddlers works its way up the rapids, between jungle and cliffs, to the falls. At the top you swim to a cave behind the water. The way back down the rapids is the reason people call it a roller coaster. Tipping the paddlers is optional in name and expected in practice. Budget for it. Lunch is at the oldest restaurant in town, at your own expense. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

  1. Tagaytay

Tagaytay City is one of the best views in the Philippines that is still close to the capital: under two hours from Manila, cooler than the lowland, and looking straight down on Taal Lake and the volcano island in the middle of it.

  2. Lake Taal

The volcano seen from outside the 6 km danger zone.

  3. Pagsanjan Falls

At the river the driver hands you over to the paddlers and the raft, and from there it is a run of rapids up to Pagsanjan Falls at the end.
