Seven hours around the Reykjanes Peninsula, with the option of being dropped at the Blue Lagoon or at Keflavik Airport at the end instead of back in Reykjavik. For anyone flying out that evening, that single detail is the reason to book this one. Groups are capped at 17, and a professional guide comes with the day. The route leaves the capital past the president's house and the old fishermen's houses at Hafnarfjordur, then reaches the peninsula proper. Kleifarvatn is the lake with the stories attached, said to hide something in its depths. Graenavatn, the green lake, sits in a volcanic crater and takes its colour from a high sulphur content and a depth of about 45 metres. Krysuvik has hot springs bubbling on a hillside stained by minerals. Gunnuhver is mud pools, and it carries a ghost story in its past. At Grindavik the new lava fields are visible, along with the abandoned parts of a town that was a working community until recently. Reykjanesviti is the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, standing over the rock formations of the Valahnukamol ridge. The last stop puts you between Europe and North America, over the fissure of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. One warning the operator gives, and it is worth heeding: volcanic activity can change the route and lengthen the driving, and occasionally a section is closed and gets replaced by another.
