Quilotoa's 1280 Caldera and the Avenue of Volcanoes, from Quito
The last time Quilotoa erupted was 1280. What it left is a caldera three kilometres across, 1.8 miles, now full of turquoise water. The name comes from Quechua, the language of the people native to the central Andes. The drive from Quito runs along the Avenue of Volcanoes, with the Ecuadorian Andes on both sides for most of it. At the lagoon the walk is moderate, and the guide covers the indigenous cultures of these mountains and their traditions. Tigua is the other stop, for its naïf paintings and the country round the village. Entrances are included. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
