Cotopaxi from the North Gate: an Hour on Horseback with the Chagras, Then Base Camp
This one enters Cotopaxi National Park by the north gate, which is the side most tours never use, and leaves by the south gate, which is the side they all use. The day starts with a stop for groceries: water and food to carry into the park. Arrival at the north gate is between 9:15 and 9:30, after the drive along the Avenue of Volcanoes. The first hour is on horseback, inside the park, with the Chagras, the Andean cowboys of Ecuador. No riding experience is needed, and experienced riders are not bored by it. Then a 35-minute drive climbs from 4,000 m (12,000 ft) to 4,550 m (15,000 ft), where the walking starts. The hike takes about an hour to base camp at 4,900 m (16,000 ft), at the Refugio José Rivas, where there is food and something hot. Lunch is eaten up there rather than on the way out, which is the point of the arrangement. After the time at base camp, the descent goes back to the car park and out through the south gate. The return takes about three hours. Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in South America, and the booking supports a local community development project. One caution from the operator: the roads are uneven, the mountain weather turns fast and the altitude is real. It is not recommended for anyone with a serious heart condition. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
