Cotopaxi Hike and Bike: Up to the Refuge, Down to Limpiopungo on Two Wheels
Two ways of moving in one day: on foot going up, on a bicycle coming down. The walk takes you to the José Rivas refuge at 4,897 m, where there are hot drinks and time for photographs before turning round. The descent is the part that separates this from every other Cotopaxi day trip. From the car park below the volcano the route runs down to the Limpiopungo lagoon by bike, which is a long way to travel without pedalling much. Pick-up is at 7:10 a.m., either in front of the church or at Queen Victoria and Foch in Quito. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
