Quilotoa Crater Lake: the Descent Is Easy, the Climb Back Is Not
Three hours from Quito, inside the Los Ilinizas Ecological Reserve, a turquoise lake sits in the crater of Quilotoa. The day starts at the community lookout on the rim, then goes down to the water, with free time to walk along the shore. The part worth planning for is the way back up. It is a hard climb at that altitude, and the community rents mules on the spot for anyone who would rather not walk it, at around $10 per person, paid directly to them. After the lunch break the road home stops at an artisan workshop in Tigua, known for its painted panels, and at the lookout over the Toachi river canyon. Entrance fees are included, and the tour runs daily. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
