Pompeii Tickets, Lunch, and a Mountain Guide at the Crater
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
SorrentoA full day from either Sorrento or Naples, with the tickets and the lunch already in the price. Pompeii comes first, with an authorised guide. The streets are still streets, and what stands along them are houses, baths, bakeries and frescoes that the ash kept. Lunch is light, at a local restaurant, and it is included. Then Vesuvius. The walk up the slope ends at the crater rim, where a professional mountain guide takes over and covers the volcano itself. The rim is at 1,280 metres, with the crater on one side and the Gulf of Naples on the other. Choose the departure that matches where you are staying, the Sorrento option or the Naples one. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays the Sorrento pick-up is at 08:15 at the Achille Lauro car park, by the info point.

Archaeological Park of Pompeii
The ruins of Pompeii cover a large site in southern Campania, near the Gulf of Naples. It was a prosperous Roman city until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD buried it under metres of ash and pumice. What has been excavated, streets and houses, can be walked through.
Foro de Pompeya
The Civil Forum was the centre of daily life. The buildings for running the city and administering justice faced onto it, along with the business quarter, the markets and the main places of worship.
Tempio di Giove Capitolino
The Temple of Jupiter stands over the north side of the Forum. The three cult statues, Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, copied those of the Capitolium in Rome and were set on a high base so that anyone crossing the square could see them.
Via dell’Abbondanza
Via dell'Abbondanza is one of the main streets of Pompeii, running from the Forum to the Amphitheatre.
Macellum
The Macellum is a tuff quadriporticus with a hall for worship raised on the eastern side, in line with the entrance. It was the city's food market, and nothing more complicated than that.
Lupanar
The brothel of Pompeii, with the erotic paintings on its walls. The women who worked there were mostly Greek and Oriental slaves.
Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane)
The Stabian Baths are the oldest and the largest of the five public bath complexes in Pompeii.
Teatro Grande
Comedies and tragedies in the Greek and Roman tradition were staged in the Large Theatre. It was the first large public building to be cleared completely of the eruption deposits.
Pompeii
A light lunch at a local restaurant.
Vesuvius National Park
Vesuvius, with the whole Gulf of Naples below and the colours of the volcanic ground around you. The path to the top is uneven and hard going in places, and what you get at the end is the return on it: the crater on one side, one of the best known volcanoes in the world under your feet.
