Pacaya via the Calderas Lagoon: 2.5 Hours Up, No Crater Access
The base of Pacaya is about 15 miles, 25 km, south east of Antigua. From there the walk up takes two and a half hours with a guide. The route is mild rather than punishing, and it passes a viewing spot at the lagoon of Calderas, with Agua, Fuego and Acatenango lined up across the view. Worth being clear about the top: the crater itself is closed to visitors for safety, and this tour does not go to it. What the plateau gives instead is the sight of red-hot lava running and the steam baths the heat of the mountain opens in the ground, with the country of Guatemala spread out below. There is time to stop up there before the walk back down to the base. Pacaya stands over 8,000 feet, 2,438 m, and is considered the most active volcano in Guatemala. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
