Pacaya to la Meseta with Old Town Outfitters: 8am to 4pm, Picnic on the Lava
The group meets at 08:00 at the Old Town Outfitters shop in Antigua, where there is drinking water, a bathroom and outdoor kit for sale before anyone sets off. The drive to the park office takes just over an hour in private transport, and the day runs about eight hours in total, back in town around 16:00. The climb is relatively easy and takes an hour and a half, up to the fertile shelf below the cinder cone that everyone calls la Meseta. The recent lava flows are laid out from there, and the group walks into them, with the smoking crater above and the ground turning into something that stops resembling Guatemala. Lunch is a picnic prepared fresh, eaten with Agua, Fuego and Acatenango in the view. The descent crosses the rest of the dried lava and then drops through forest and farmland on the side of the mountain that few people see. Private transport, all entry and guide fees, the lunch and a bilingual guide trained in first aid are included. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Antigua
Guatemala's most accessible active volcano, in its own national park: a continuous plume of smoke off the summit and a large dried lava field filling the valley below the caldera.
