Volcano Travel · Tour
Pacaya, One of National Geographic's Ten Most Adventurous, from Antigua
An hour's drive from Antigua and three hours of walking, on a route National Geographic has listed among the ten most adventurous tours in the world. The subject is not only the volcano. The guide works on the ecology of the mountain and on what it does to the land and the economy around it, which is a different conversation from the usual one about lava. From up there the view runs to the Pacific coast, across the valley that holds Guatemala City, and out to the volcanoes standing nearby. Two things to know before booking: the tour needs a minimum of two adults to run, and if that is not met the booking is refunded or moved; and pick-up happens within fifteen minutes of the time on your confirmation. Bring walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and a camera. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Pacaya Volcano
A half-day on the country's most active volcano, walking at 8,000 feet with an expert guide. Departures are from most Antigua hotels, and the pick-up falls within fifteen minutes of the time on your confirmation. The 2 to 3 hour walk to the top is manageable for a first-time trekker and still feels like a workout. Agua, Fuego and Acatenango stand around the trails. A minimum of two adults is required, or the tour may be cancelled and the tickets refunded or rescheduled. Bring walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and a camera.
