An hour's drive from Antigua and three hours of walking, on a route National Geographic has listed among the ten most adventurous tours in the world. The subject is not only the volcano. The guide works on the ecology of the mountain and on what it does to the land and the economy around it, which is a different conversation from the usual one about lava. From up there the view runs to the Pacific coast, across the valley that holds Guatemala City, and out to the volcanoes standing nearby.
